Building a powerful personal brand on LinkedIn can contribute greatly to your career success.
People have been saying that it’s like Facebook for professionals but a lot of them are missing out on the opportunities in this business and employment platform.
The question is, with over 470 million users, how do you stand out from the crowd?
Here are a few things you can do to create a better impression on LinkedIn and grow your personal brand.
#1 OPTIMIZE YOUR PROFILE
To optimize means to improve the efficiency or to make the best use of something. This is exactly what you should do to your LinkedIn profile.
The first thing that you need to have is a professional profile photo and background photo. People will trust you better when they can connect a face to a name. Refrain from using personal photos like bikini photos from your last trip. Show off your personality but keep it classy.
Next, craft a strategic and distinctive headline. This describes who you are and what you do. It is one of the first things that people look at when they view your profile. Use relevant keywords so you can be found easier and more frequently.
Lastly, make sure that you post complete information and create a customized LinkedIn URL. You can do this by clicking ‘Edit public profile & URL’ on the upper right side of your profile.
For best results, use the format linkedin.com/in/yourfullname and share the link in different social networks. By doing this, your profile and your name can get higher search rankings on Google.
#2 MAKE IT VISUAL
We all know that a picture paints a thousand words.
Instead of just telling people what you do, you can show them!
You can add photos or videos under the Experience, Education and Summary Sections to better illustrate the things that you want to share with people who check out your profile.
LinkedIn is a more serious platform compared to other big social networking sites so you have to find ways to keep people interested.
By using photos and videos, you can show more of your personality and make people feel closer to you. This is also the same reason why I encouraged you to make use of your profile photo and Linkedin background.
#3 PUBLISH CONTENT AND ENGAGE
One of the best ways to engage with your connections and establish yourself as a thought leader is through blogging.
You can make use of LinkedIn Publisher to share useful information and show your expertise. Show up consistently and interact with other people’s posts!
Another thing that influencers have been doing is writing long-form status messages that share inspirational stories about them or their business.
The likes and comments on your blogs and status messages can help you reach more people that are in the 2nd or 3rd degrees of your network. Your published content can also appear in Google searches if you make them public.
Don’t just go on LinkedIn to try to sell something. Build genuine relationships by sharing your story and listening to others.
#4 GET ENDORSEMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Instead of always speaking about yourself and your credentials, you will appear to be more credible when other people vouch for you.
Ask colleagues or clients to write recommendations after you’ve finished working on a project or task and let them share what they loved about you and your work.
This will attract more people to work with you based on the words of other people.
These are just a few actionable steps you can do to level up your personal branding game.
LinkedIn is definitely a more serious platform compared to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t spice things up with words, photos and videos that you share online.
